Commission Review: Hey, how much am I paying?

Segment: Brokerage

Abstract | Table of Contents

For the most part, we have seen online commissions among discount firms trend lower since our last comparison, four years ago. On the other hand, we actually noticed some firms raise their automated phone and broker-assisted commissions. We found, however, that only one firm does not charge anything additional for a broker-assisted trade. Additionally, the introduction of commission-free trade programs by three brokerage firms certainly increases competitive pressure. Even handling fees, charged on top of posted commission rates, were removed by all but one discount firm – further indication that competitive pressure has driven rates lower. Handling fees continue to be charged by all of our full-service firms. Stock commissions at the full-service firms – as quoted by our financial advisors – increased slightly at three firms, though all remain in the same general range.
