Article: Recap - 2012 LOMA Life Insurance and LIMRA Retirement Conferences
Last week, we attended the LOMA Life Insurance and LIMRA Retirement Conferences down in sunny Orlando, Florida. Many industry leaders were present for discussions that ranged from current life insurance and annuity trends to the overall state of the retirement landscape. Bob Kerzner, CEO of LIMRA/LOMA delivered the opening remarks for the Life Insurance Conference and highlighted several key trends uncovered by LIMRA’s research. Mr. Kerzner touched upon the 75% increase in SPIA sales in 2011 and shared some consumer opinion charts that drive home the importance of trust in the advisor-client relationship.

Article: 2012 Annuity Product Update – First Quarter
Since the last installment of our quarterly Annuity Product Update, four new products have been released or updated by Annuity Monitor firms including one variable annuity, two indexed annuities and one fixed annuity. Here is a look at what the Annuity Monitor firms were up to in the first quarter of 2012: Allianz Life – Allianz 365i Fixed Index Annuity The firm introduced the new Allianz 365i Annuity to its already impressive suite of fixed index annuities. The new product offers clients the potential for interest based on changes in a market index, a 6% premium bonus on money placed into the annuity within the first three years, flexible income options and free withdrawals each year of up to 10% of the total premium paid.

Jackson National recently introduced a new variable annuity product called Elite Access. The firm designed the new annuity product to challenge traditional thinking in portfolio management and address ongoing market volatility. The Elite Access product focuses on greater portfolio diversification by utilizing alternative asset allocations, such as commodities and futures. Clients are able to create a customized portfolio from a wide variety of traditional and alternative investment options or opt for one of the professionally managed portfolios – Tactical Management, Risk Management and Guidance Portfolio. Unlike other variable annuity products, Elite Access does not offer any living benefits or step-ups.

Article: Sun Life Continues Push for Variable Annuity Education
A recent survey by Sun Life Financial shows that according to financial advisors, over half of their clients that may benefit from variable annuities don’t actually own one, and this is due in large part to investors’ lack of knowledge about these complex investments. Because of this, many annuity providers have been creating videos to help clients better understand the key features of variable annuities, as we first discussed on our blog back in March. Sun Life Financial is continuing this push for annuity education, as the firm recently unveiled its new public Look on the Bright Side informational video. The new video aims to educate investors on some of the basic features found in variable annuities, such as retirement income accumulation and the building of a withdrawal base, as well as how the products can provide lifetime income for retirees, and the available optional benefit riders.

New York Life recently unveiled a new collection of asset allocations – the Efficient Income Frontier – that are designed to optimize the risk-return ratio with the client’s needs and goals in mind. The portfolios associated with the Efficient Income Frontier utilize a specific methodology to develop combinations of stocks and bonds along with a fixed lifetime income annuity. In conjunction with this new collection of asset allocations, the firm released a new Efficient Income Frontier Tool which is designed to help client’s maximize their estate potential while minimizing their income risk.
