In this Credit Card Monitor report, our first comprehensive look at gift cards since 2004, we examined the options, fees, and promotions associated with the six issuers who currently offer and promote gift cards online. We found that the best gift cards and card centers were the ones that offered clients the most variety. This included variety in card designs and such other customization features as embossing options, customizable card values, and unique delivery choices. The issuers in this report offered three different embossing options – recipient’s name, the value of the card, and special messages – and every firm offered at least one embossing option. One third of card companies facilitated all three choices.

Mailed card solicitations remain an important client acquisition strategy at most firms, but the importance of online applications continues to grow at pace with the Internet as a whole. In this month's Credit Card Monitor comprehensive review of online applications, our first since December 2004, we found a very uneven landscape, with card issuers taking many different approaches to offering online applications. The best use recent developments in web design and formatting to present pages that are easy to read and require minimal scrolling.

Despite the near-ubiquity of online card payment tools, there are extensive variations between payments capabilities at different card issuers. Depending on the firm, card payments are limited to being scheduled immediately, on any date up to the minimum payment date, or several months in advance. The top-performing firms offer tools that permit the most scheduling flexibility, allowing clients to set up immediate, future-dated, and recurring payments. Top-performing firms also provide an informative interface and easy access to scheduled payment tables.
