To help prospects select an appropriate checking account for their needs, most banks now offer comparison charts, tables that compare and contrast information about the accounts they offer. In this report, we look at the composition of these comparison charts and the information contained within, examining which charts provide the best recourses to prospective account holders.
This edition of Bank Monitor looks at the various checking account comparison charts available on banking public sites to help prospects select an appropriate account. The report focuses on the design of each firm’s comparison charts, along with the account details the comparison provides. In particular, as we looked at each firm’s Comparison Charts, we honed in on the following key issues:
  • Which features and benefits are included within the chart?
  • Do charts provide text details for each listed attribute, or merely show which attributes are present?
  • Are prospects able to adjust or control the charts in any way?
  • Are borders or shading used to display information more clearly?
Unsurprisingly, each of the banks we track treats comparison charts in their own way. While each firm’s chart includes at least some specific details, most often about account minimums, many continue to offer charts dominated by checkmarks. These checkmarks indicate that a given account offers a particular feature without providing any additional information about it. While such charts can provide important information to prospects, the best instead offer more detailed data points. The highest scoring banks in our report offer a variety of in-depth data points to prospective account holders within the comparison chart, with two firms breaking comparison charts into collapsible sections for easier reading. Interestingly, though several firms enable users to select the accounts they would like to compare, either prior to launching the chart or by dynamically dismissing unwanted accounts from the chart, all but one bank ensures that all of its checking accounts can be viewed in a single chart, if desired.

As we continued to investigate the checking comparison charts provided by each bank we track, we came across the following additional key findings:
  • The maximum number of discrete data points offered in a comparison chart is 28.
  • Just under 50% of firms use alternate-row shading to enhance the readability of their comparison charts.
  • While 11 of the 13 banks in this report include monthly service fee information within their comparison charts, only six also provide minimum opening deposit details.
