Nearly all checking accounts carry at least some fees, with even fee-averse accounts from Internet banks charging users for services like Wire Transfers. In this Bank Monitor report, we break down the current fees associated with base-level checking accounts at 16 banks, including maintenance fees, reprint fees and other charges associated with having an open account.
Fees have long been a regular aspect of checking accounts, with every account offered by a major banking firm carrying charges for performing at least some transactions or services. In this edition of Bank Monitor Report, we look at the fees currently attached to base-level checking accounts and how well those fees are disclosed by firms on their public sites. As we investigated each firm’s publicly available fee information, we focused on the following issues:
Some firms offer a wealth of fee details online, with one firm even offering a secondary navigational header for Fees At A Glance. Others perform poorly, however, with prospective clients required to contact customer service for answers to fee questions. Most firms fall within these two extremes, offering fee information through links in the fine print to PDFs of the latest fee schedule.
