This Property & Casualty Insurance Monitor report compares the auto quote tools firms provide on their public sites. In our review, we looked at inputs of the tool, the overall layout and additional features, such as live CSR chat or the ability to save progress. We also evaluated the final quote page, looking at the available plan variations and the promoted rate price, and looked for follow-up phone calls, mailings and emails firms sent to help entice auto quote users to become clients.

Final Quote
Auto quote tools are a feature provided by all but two of the firms we track. Overall, we were pleased with performance in this report, with three firms earning an A and two others earning a B. Only two firms received a D, the lowest score in this report.
When evaluating firms by their inputs page, we found that most firms ask the same general questions about the car to be insured under the policy. All firms ask about the vehicle’s year, make, model and body style or sub-model, as well as ownership status and whether the car is equipped with anti-theft alarms. Firms vary in the questions they ask about the drivers, however, with the most popular questions including marital status, home ownership and which age the users became licensed drivers.
Firms generally offer similar features in the quote tools. All firms except one display a progress meter, and 60% of firms include FAQs. While all firms allow users to access their finished quote at a later date, only 50% include a save feature throughout the tool, allowing potential clients to complete the tool in multiple sessions. Only 40% of firms offer live chat assistance.
Finally, firms varied with the final quote pages they presented. Three firms displayed a single price, while two firms included two tiers of plans and three promoting three options. Two firms disappointed and did not provide a final quote price. All firms allow users to customize coverages, though only four firms offer side-by-side comparison.
